James L Gamble is an American former professional baseball player, entrepreneur, author, and leader in athlete development and advancement. Born on August 27, 1972, in Morgan City, Louisiana, he stands 5′11″ and played baseball as a pitcher, second baseman, and right fielder during his professional career. He batted and threw right-handed. Gamble spent three seasons (1995–97) in independent minor league baseball with teams such as Corpus Christi and Saskatoon in the Prairie League and Tex/La League, accumulating experience on the mound and in the field before transitioning from playing to broader roles in the sport.
After completing his collegiate education — he graduated from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette (formerly USL) in 1995 — Gamble embarked on a multifaceted baseball career that spanned coaching, executive leadership, scouting, and player development.
Gamble’s post-playing career includes:
- Serving in a variety of leadership roles within professional baseball, including Assistant General Manager of the Visalia Oaks (Oakland A’s A-Ball affiliate) in 1998 and working as a Minor League Pitching Coach for two seasons.
- Becoming Commissioner of the Southeastern League, where under his administration, franchises — including the Asheville and Pensacola independent teams — continued to operate and help develop players.
- Founding the Pensacola Pelicans independent professional baseball team, which he later sold to businessman Quint Studer; that franchise ultimately evolved into what became the Pensacola Blue Wahoos.
- Scouting both domestically and internationally, evaluating talent for colleges, professional clubs, and international teams.
Gamble’s entrepreneurial and developmental vision is most prominently embodied in the Global Scouting Bureau (GSB), a scouting, advancement, and athlete development organization he founded more than two decades ago. GSB has assisted thousands of athletes — from youth and amateur players to college and professional prospects — with college placement, team placements, exposure showcases, and professional advancement services used by MLB, independent, and international teams.
In addition to his executive and scouting work, Gamble is also a published author and speaker on recruiting, athlete mindset, personal development, and advancement in sports. His books available through public listings include:
- Rich Athlete, Poor Athlete: How to Build a Mindset for Success — a guide to athletic mindset and success for athletes, coaches, and parents.
- Getting Paid to Play: An Inside Track to Professional Baseball (Player Advancement Series) — a book focused on helping athletes navigate the pathway to professional baseball.
- IT’S MY TIME: Understanding College Recruiting and College Placement — co-authored work on recruiting processes and maximizing collegiate placement opportunities.
Gamble also holds leadership roles with organizations such as the Southeast Showcase Series, where he serves as Director, helping operate showcase events that give athletes exposure and recruiting opportunities to colleges and professional scouts.
Throughout his career, James Gamble has combined his firsthand experience as a player with operational expertise in scouting and athlete advancement, building a diverse portfolio of leadership roles that emphasize developing opportunities for aspiring athletes at all levels of the game.
